Thanks for sharing this. Very interesting camera 😮
After buying so many gears, i have realised that content is more important than gears.. gears are just gimmicks.. we should be happy with whatever we have n create…😢
I think the reason to buy new gear is when you’re hitting a hurdle or roadblock in your content creation. Don’t ever buy gear just to buy gear, but when you visualize something and want to create a specific shot, but you don’t have the gear to do it, that’s when it’s time to upgrade!
These are both great perspectives. I use my DJI action 2 for its light weight tiny stature for POV shots, and my Insta360 X3 for other creative shots. Looking into the Action 4 now because Desert heat in the summer for motorcycle riding shuts down my action 2 real quick.
David, Does the DJI Action 4 still have infuriating 4gb file size limit? Thanks, as always, for the fantastic video. I have bought every DJI pocket and action camera and love them all. But I gave up on all of them for the infuriating 4 GB file size limit have. did they solve that and do they now allow you to record Larger video files? – Eric ZORK Alan & Sweetie [ Professional Poets & Bed Vloggers ]
A moment of silence for those who bought the Dji Action 3 recently. 😅 This is why I always search for the leaks. I knew about it few weeks ago.
I was just watching osmo 3 vs GoPro 11 videos lol glad I waited
I was lucky , bought A3 yesterday and cancelled today 😂
@Karol Pogorzelski that was a close call!
Unfortunately, it always seems to happen! I wish DJI and GoPro would release new action cameras before summer. I feel like that’s when a ton of people are buying action cameras for trips and adventures!
@David Manning yup 🙌
Nice job as usual man.
I noticed from your comparison between 3 and 4 , much better HDR on 4 , thank you so much for this amazing video about Osmo action 4 💞 , direct to amazon , I will order one now 😍
Yeah, the jump from the 3 to 4 is really noticeable on my computer screen! This thing is a beast!
@David Manning Thank you so much , I ordered it already from Amazon , waiting to delivery to try it on next journey, I am traveller and photographer as well 😉
The most important thing for me, does DJI still not include the AEB photo mode that the original Osmo Action (Osmo Action 1) had?
I was hoping for a resolution bump with the sensor area increase, but it’s actually lower than the Action 3. I bit of a bummer since I like to use my Action 3 for stills.
Great camera! Unfortunately not much has changed from the previous model. All improvements, as little as they may seem, are great and very much needed to push & keep the industry evolving, and I don’t want to take away from that. This being said, here are some thoughts about some changes and things to consider if you are thinking about buying this:
1st – 18m waterproofness instead of 16m– great! I get that 18m is the standard depth limit for open-water diving and it’s very cool that the camera is on par and can handle this. But the average person going for a dive most likely won’t reach 16m let alone 18m! And if the person does, chances are high that she/he is somehow invested in the sport, has a diving watch, and won’t be guessing their depth. Also, if they ARE invested they WILL eventually go even deeper than 18m, then needing a case anyway. At that point, there’s not much difference between the Action 3 and 4 anymore🤷 it’s nice to have, but could’ve improved something more significant instead.
2nd – Larger sensor– Obviously the major and best selling point for this newer version. Not much to say. It’s amazing to see!
3rd – Image quality– which goes hand in hand with the sensor and was one of the few and only, yet very important aspects, where many people preferred the GoProHero11 over the DJIOsmoAction3. A big selling point for GoPro! But DJI stepped up their game and might even be on top now!
4th – The Action4 is obviously here to compete with the current GoPro Hero11 & the coming Hero12. Yet, this camera still can’t shoot 240fps @2,7k which I know doesn’t bother most people (me included) but I’ve heard people complain about it on the Action 3 while the Hero11 already had it. So you would at least expect that DJI implements this in the Action 4, right? Yeah, but they didn’t. They are now 2 generations behind GoPro. It’s just a must at this point.
5th – Selling a separate GPS Bluetooth Remote Controller for € 80,- !! is really lame from DJI, honestly… not much to be said. Just disappointing. Just build it in like GoPro man, can’t be that hard + it’s not like you don’t need to buy a ton of other accessories already anyways 🙄
DJI does have its advantages like the mounting, larger FOV, amazing charging “system”, and now probably the better footage too.
So, basically what I am trying to say is that the DJI Action 4 is a very minor upgrade from the Action 3 and I’m not sure if the price difference is justified… I feel like it’s in GoPro’s hands now. Interested to see how they will handle this.
This is GoPro’s chance to really catch up! If GoPro fixes their problems (shutting down due to overheating or due to too cold of an environment, overall reliability and customer service) and makes a bigger sensor like DJI did too, it’ll get kind of tough for DJI to be honest. Obviously or at least you would think so, they are gonna increase their prices too but it’s not like DJI didn’t anyways and if it’s not as much as DJI did… 👀👀
I’d really consider the Action 3 for most people. And even if you want the DJI Osmo Action 4 which is understandable given the better sensor (not understandable for any other improvement tho), I’d still wait to see if they have other problems like the previous version did in the beginning or just to see how the GoPro Hero 12 compares. That’ll be interesting for sure.
Couldn’t agree more! I actually tried it in the local store tonight, not much difference from action 3 expect better image quality. I’ll wait for GoPro 12 and see if there’s any major update. From my point of view the action 4 can’t even beat GoPro 11 in daylight mode.
I’ve gotta say that I agree with most of your points, but disagree with your conclusion. The sensor upgrade is a major jump and with those new image adjustment settings and low light setting, the footage coming out of this thing is a big jump from the 3. I think you’re right that for most people, the 3 was plenty good enough, super reliable, and easy to use. But for users that prioritize image quality, a new sensor in a camera, especially when they make it bigger, is always a big jump.
Also, it does suck that you need a separate remote for GPS. That’s lame.
I bought the Action 3 earlier this year and I am very satisfied. Not looking to purchase the 4 at all. Great review as always. That low light performance does look awesome tho.
I think it would be really cool for DJI to offer a “Just the camera” option like literally nothing else for those who have everything else 😉 that would be amazing for peoples’ pockets + great for reducing e-waste
That’s the $399 option. You still get a battery and the cage with it, but it’s pretty stripped down for you
@David Manning yeah, I know about this one, which is great, but I’m talking about literally >just< the camera 😂
Can we also just say how good the charging case is, in that it also has a slot for SD cards. It’s the little things that make DJI standout from the competition.
The charge case is incredible and is one of those little additions to the kit that just makes life easier🙌
How does it perform in water without a dive case? That’s been my biggest concern with this camera
Thanks for the informative video. What about overheating issues for the Action 4 when recording for a longer time period? 🔥
Oh my gosh, watch out David, Eleanor was telling us about the batteries…she’s trying to take your job, lol. Adorable kids.
Honestly, I don’t think there’s a significant upgrade unless you record in low light situations a lot. However, since I have the Action 3 adventure package, I wouldn’t need the Action 4 adventure package IF I were to purchase the 4…but I think I’ll skip the 4.
Make sure you keep watching till the end, it’s the best part 😂.
Btw I am a Gopro fan but I really love the Action 4. Waiting to see what Gopro12 will offer then decide which one to get
I was thinking about buying another action camera (I have a GoPro 10 & Insta 360 GO III) and I’m SO glad I have waited! Can’t wait to see the comparison to the GoPro 11 but I’m sure leaning towards this new Osmo Action 4!
Hey David. I like your videos, but not too long ago you started adding a lot more pops and clicks and cash register sounds every time you pop up text on screen. This is really very irritating. Seems like a gimmick to keep the attention of people with low attention spans. I honestly don’t think that’s what your audience is like, so maybe all the little sounds aren’t really appropriate. And it would probably save you a lot of editing time if you don’t put those in future videos. Just a suggestion. 👍
I had an order placed for an Action 3 that wasn’t scheduled to ship until August 14th. Decided to cancel it and order this instead. This is me switching from using Hero 7’s and avoiding GoPro because of their constant issues with overheating and freezing. Looking forward to receiving it.
I will be buying the 4 simply for the larger sensor nd low light benefits.
I have the action 3 and has been absolutely phenomenal, no issues and a world better than action 2.
The 3 previous GoPros I owned were terrible, poor batteries, overheating and all of them had multiple software crashes losing my footage.
Not a fan boy, simply like gear that works. dji editing software is also brilliant.
