-> Get Paid To Take Photos <-
I got you covered bro!
The image leak was made by GoPro them self as i can confirm. Btw ever saw a leaked image of a gopro which was turned on???
The intention of course was to tell the people “hey dont buy an action 4, our next gopro got 4k240 and 1 inch sensor, hold on”
We will likely see packaging photos around 1 week before official launch in early mid september.
I can confirm that these images are legit and were made inside GoPros facility.
I also have some more specs and details but yet i cant reveal too much, else i might get in trouble.
And yes gopro was scared of action 4 launch thats why the 12 is such a big leap. Could even be a bigger one if action 4 improved more.
GoPro prepared themself with the 12 a lot to compete with action 4.
Confirmed Specs:
Yes the sensor is 1 inch in size.
Yes 4K240 is legit but only 8 bit.
No 8K wont be available for the 12, but in the upcoming generations.
Sensor MP count is ~37 (currently gopro has no need to give consumers 8K since action 4 has low specs compared).
Yes 6K60 will be available in 10 bit full hypersmooth 6.0
With the new sensor and improved dynamic range you will get a new log profile (g-log) and new gamut (GWG gopro wide gamut).
With that the bitrate gets bumbed up as well. Dont be scared but i saw internal testing with 300-400 mbits. 450 max but it was unstable due to SD card overheating.
For good quality on 4K240 you need at least 250 mbits. less than that and its just a blocky mess at high motion.
Yes 1080p gets 480 fps with hypersmooth. But hypersmooth wont do too much since 20x slowmo is already smoothing the image.
2,7K 480p and 8K60 is doable in terms of encoding load. But they save that for a future model.
Yes the 12 can handle 1080p 960 fps (no hs) but it will be activated in future iterations. currently looks like crap since you need at least 500 mbits hevc for a good image.
Some notes on 8K60, the cameras biggest issue is battery and heat at 4k240. thats why the 12 has to be extended.
Yes there will be a bigger battery requiered for the 12.
Little tip: dont shot 4K240 for too long 😉
Price wise its gonna be hell since action 4 is no threat (599,99 EUR or 649,99 EUR currently thats the options gopro is discussing internally).
What about 5,3K120 10 Bit? Also somewhat editable as David mentioned?
First of all 5,3K120 is tbh not the worst decoding load using Intel igpu decoding. Keep in mind you really gonna play that footage back on a 24/25/30p timeline and not play it back raw in vlc player so your gpu 3d load gonna process 30p not the full 120p. Anyway without HW acceleration dont get the Hero12/11.
About 5,3K120 10 Bit, it is not too easy to answer, currently they are not sure if this is going to be an upgrade for the 13 or available in the 12 at launch. Possible that this even gets added later on the year via firmware patch. In terms of encoding load 5,3K120 is a ~5% decrease compared to 4K240.
A little site note on 4K240, unless you use our labs (beta) firmware and push the bitrate beyond 350 mbits, you will not enjoy this mode with high motion in your scene. With these high performance modes many SD cards will definitively start to fail. Yet i would recommend if you got a hero 11 to test your sd write speed with the above mentioned labs firmware. (hero 10 only gets 250 mbits, limited by internal components.) You should get at least 450 better 500+ mbits constant with no drops below 500 to be somewhat safe for hero12 if you are looking for clean slow motion footage.@Kenflyer
This all just sounds way too crazy for a GoPro… I’m hopeful that you’re secretly working for GoPro and sneaking all of this info out the side door, but I’m gonna need to see it to believe it!
@DavidManningvlog if you look at the leaked image of the GoPro where it says 1 inch sensor, look below the thumb in that image and you’ll see what looks like the “end” of a number 2 (which probably says 12)
I’m the only person to have spotted this and said it numerous times
GREAT perspective. I will say owning the Hero 10, I have no reason to upgrade until they come out with a 1 inch sensor. BUT i upgrade DAY 1, WHEN/IF a 1inch is added.
It would be better if they made a good application, return support of Apple Watch, correct a bunch of little things, like custom names of presets
That’s sort of where I’m at with the GoPro. It’s so damn good quality wise, just needs to tighten up the reliability. Give me a Hero 11 that’s reliable and I would gladly upgrade!
If I had to do a specs review of a product I already own, I’d be chuckeling the whole video.
I would like to see a macro lens mod.
Gopro can go back to old style naming and release 3 cameras like they use to do.
Gopro 12 black with 1” censor
12 silver with slightly new censor and 12 session
Gopro hero 12, the best overheating beast
I would be most excited if GoPro had a built-in microphone jack and/or some sort of magnetic quick-release mount. You can’t wrestle me away from a DJI Action 4 with more megapixels or higher frame rate resolution. However, I do appreciate the 8:7 aspect ratio.
Ulanzi do a replacement dji magnetic mount for GoPro. I just ordered one today
Cant wait to see what gopro has to offer this year, I dont know why I feel that Osmo action would still be better in low light, but lets see what happens!
Hope you’ll make a comparison video , and if you do please do not forget to include low light capabilities!!
I really wish they offered a telephoto lens .. so that it’ll solves all purposes!!
Great video as usual !!
I thought the same regarding the last rumour, one model for the sport/adventure lovers and one (inch) for filmmakers. Seems like a less risky approach
Hi David. FYI, I went to buy a shirt or few on your site and found you don’t take PayPal. I’ve had my identity stolen too much to give out my card info. I’ve heard the “secured site” thing before and still got nailed. Sorry.
Who cares what GoPro releases, we already know the image quality is going to be great but its just going to overheat, lag, glitch, and freeze. The last good gopros were the Hero 4 Black and the hero 5 session.
Wouldn’t mind a Macro Lense on my GoPro tbh 🤔
The outro….priceless. Hold on to them as long as you can my man!
😭😭😭
Hey David- can you make a short on this (if it’s not just my GoPro)- on the hero11 the battery percentage changes % value when you switch resolution setting. I.e- 5k to 1080 I lose 10% battery. The dumbest design ever if this isn’t just my GoPro. I get it drains more in higher resolution but just make it drop faster. % doesn’t logically represent that
They just need the new one to not overheat as much as the current one… I’m still using the 8 which is pretty reliable
Reliability is key!
Agree again with a lot of this, but… Okay, GoPro could release a 1-inch separate version, or at least a second GoPro. Why? Because in an earnings call a couple of years back a more pro orientated GoPro was mooted. So it could be it’s taken longer than predicted to become reality. The big question is, is there a market to support it? The pro community shouts louder than the consumer one, but makes up a fraction of the revenue. So for the moment I’m going with the idea that it was proposed, but shelved. There’s a lot more to the sensor stuff and the GP processor. With regard to the latter, I predict we’ll still see the GP2. It will have required a lot of R&D, and GoPro will want to make a full return on it. Though it may have a variation, maybe more ram for example. Ram was the main differentiator between the HERO5 and the HERO7 with the GP1. Look at the difference. The 5 had no decent stabilisation, while the 7 had HyperSmooth. That’s the difference it can make. And that goes for other image processing pipelines as well.
I’m totally with you that GoPro’s core demo is not after a super high end action camera and I think most of their decisions reflect that. But like Apple with the Apple Watch Ultra, there’s an appetite for people to pickup the best of the best, even if they’re not going to use it to their full potential. I’m hoping, because I’m absolutely in that camp!
At this point, I’m sticking with the 11. I can’t imagine how much better it count get.
We are absolutely plateauing with action cameras. For their size, there’s not much more you can pack into them, which is why I want to see stable and reliable as GoPro’s core focus going forward. Unfortunately, that’s not as fun in a promo video
I disagree with you on the interchangable lenses. I personally would use that all of the time. My main use is hiking in bad weather or near water, so my main camera is usually GoPro. But there are hundreds of moments during each trip where i wish i could have more reach, some telephoto option for it. You would be amazed that there are no real telephoto alternatives to gopro. There is olympus tg series which has worse quality and is now most likely discontinued forever and then you have waterproof mirrorless cameras for thousands of dollars. Nothing in the reasonable price range where gopro sits. I WANT TELEPHOTO! 🙁
I know GoPro will always be king of the action camera but they lost me on the Hero 9 and the Max. Plus, they need a Canadian distribution centre because $450 action camera becomes around $700 to $800 camera with the exchange, duty, and shipping…all in American dollars…so, it’s more like $800 at minimum. Actually, any action company that decides to have a Canadian distribution centre, would win me (and many Canadians) over. Just saying GoPro…just saying DJI…just say Insta360. Yes, I am calling out you 3 companies.
