The Best Focal Length for Beginner Street Photographers?

In today's video from I'll be shooting with the 50mm lens. The 50mm focal length is one every professional photographer should shoot with eventually in their journey. It's an exceptional focal length to start off with for beginner street photographers for lots of reasons which I enter in this video.

Take a look at the LUMIX S5II and 50mm lens:.

  1. my first lens was 35mm (50mm FF equiv.) and i actually regret buying it first, i wish i’d gone for the 23mm (35mm FF equiv.) for what i was shooting since i could have just cropped in anyway.
just feels like a very awkward focal length to me, if i have a 23mm and a 56mm then the 35mm is redundant.

    1. Funnily enough, I first had the 27mm 2.8 (equivalent 40) and sold it back after two weeks for the older 35mm 1.4 (equivalent 50mm), and I’m happier. Yes it felt awkward at fort but now I’m forced to move and approach my subject (I mainly do Street Photos) ^^

    2. @@jojoaugustus1383 This is my experience as well, tried the 23mm, didn’t like it to much; got the 27mm pancake, still didn’t use it much; then I got the 35mm f2 and loved it so much that I got the f1.4 as well. Live them both and I’m thinking about get the Sigma 56mm as well.

  2. thanks for the vid! I’m debating between a 35mm and 50mm for Fuji Xh2 so will be cropped. This was such an interesting perspective to learn from!

    1. If possible, see if you can rent both out or try in a store to see how you like them! But 50 is a great starting point lens if you need to pick one

  3. I like these videos of you, it shows your personnality and it’s nice. I think you are using the DJI pocket 3 and maybe it is too close to your face, if you want it more immersive go super wide, maybe with action 4 or insta360 ace pro… I know there is no depth of field, but we can’t have it all haha, you still have your cinematic videos for that. This is what I do with my channel too, mix between raw and cinematic travel vlogs and you are more established than me, so you will still get views either way. Keep it up!

    1. Thanks so much! I do feel like I can get a lot more personable with this filming method. I find sometimes with the more cinematic/produced videos I don’t really get to share that side much 🙂

  4. Massive fan of these videos, for what it’s worth. In fairness, I have found all your videos hugely engaging and informative, but I love the real-time feedback/thought processes that videos like this one provide. Whatever you make, I’ll be watching it. 😄

  5. I would love to see your insight on the 80/85/90mm focal length for street. I’m a huge fan of it but I don’t see many people cover that length.

  6. Awesome point yea I love the 50mm one of my all time favs. Love the format of this content 🎉..agree with the kit lens it’s value but primes teaches u see different

  7. I have the 50mm f/1.8 too but from canon, it’s an amazing lens.

  8. Very nice video! If a beginner is unsure what lens he should get, first go out with a zoom-lens and then look what you’re shooting the most. That’s the easiest way imo.

  9. just bought myself the 50mm f2 for my fujifilm x-e3. so excited to get out on the street with it.

    1. the 50mm he’s referring to applies for full frame cameras. for crop sensor cameras like the X-E3, 50mm would be around an 80mm full-frame equivalent. If you want the 50mm focal length that he’s showcasing then you should get a 35mm lens for fujifilm. a very budget friendly option i recommend is the TTartisans 35mm. it’s manual focus but the length and lack of AF personally helped me really get the hang of photography when i started out with fujifilm. in either case, happy shooting 🙂

  10. Hey Faizal, just wanted to say how much I appreciate your videos and recently your POV in the Spanish flea market. The photos of the art for sale were really beautiful and I felt the atmosphere of the market through your photos. You always teach me something very valuable and you inspire me to see the world through my camera every day.

  11. I like this kind of videos. Maybe an Insta360 Go could make your life as videographer easier? You asked for the sound quality: fine for me 👍🏻 Go ahead with this kind of videos 😊

  12. Hey, faizel, I love your stuff! I see you one handing these shots. Are you shooting on auto for everything? (Just saw the mirror aperture f9.0 shot, lol)

  13. Great video man!! The 50 has been my favorite lately again too, I also love the layering ability it gives you, like your shot at 6:01

  14. For beginners, I’d recommend a 50mm if you’re a bit shy, or 28mm if you like to be in the thick of it.

  15. Tanks for another nice video. 50 mm seems on the tighter end of the spectrum in street photography. If You compare it to the 23 that many swear by…what’s Your take?

  16. I enjoy watching POV travel videos. Boosts my confidence for upcoming Porto trip next month 😉 Guess it must be kind of weird walking around holding dj osmo… ill do it with an iphone on a chest mount 😉 Great videos as always, love your work! Cheers from Belgrade.

  17. Every time I watch one of your videos I feel like I’ve been somewhere. I enjoy seeing your photos and they make me feel good. I get motivated to go out and take photos after watching your channel. Thanks for all the great videos.

  18. I really love these videos Faizal. One of the things I love is the more traditional video shots of the cities, the ones not shot with the POV camera, the ones you sometimes stylize in black and white. They make me feel like I am really there just experiencing the place. I’ve never been a fan of the whole POV camera shake style. It makes me feel dizzy quite quickly but I happily overlook that cause your videos mix those shots well and what you teach is so important to me as I want to get better at Street Photography.

  19. I have a question about the the 50mm Lens if it has to be 50mm equivalent or 50mm lens since Fuji cameras are cropped sensor?
