  1. Another classic video, great information and lots of fun. You two need a camera challenge with the Kodak EKTAR H35 half frame camera.

  2. I bought a Nikon D800 & the 24-120mm F4 lens for under £850 from MPB. The image quality still holds up in comparison to more modern mirrorless cameras & the dynamic range is just so much better than Canon 5D Mark II/III both of which you can also get for sub £1000 from MPB. You can go see the photos I took with the D800 & the 24-120mm F4 lens on my YouTube channel.

    1. For Landscape and Street I still like dslr caemras. Even a canon 6d is dirt cheap nowadays and will produce great results with the right ef lens.
But for sport/people/portrait. I want somehow modern eye AF 🙂

  3. D800/810s are insane value for money. Because of initial problems with frames cracking, they didn’t get superb reviews when coming out, and everyone wanting mirrorless know (and as you mention nikon not being the current hot brand) they are especially cheap.
Sensor in it is still absolutely bonkers, AFAIK still in the top50 sensors of DXOmark (at least last time I checked). So definitely a great option for landscape or portrait shooting, where AF and burst rate are much less important.

    1. I would still get a Z5. IBIS gives you sharper images, higher resolution is only relevant on tripods or with flash (or very bright sunny day) without IBIS or VR support. F-mount glass isn’t as great as Z-mount lenses either. The newer 24-120mm f/4 Z beats all the F-mount zooms of similar focal length.

  4. Last year I purchased a Nikon z6 to venture into the world of video and it was one of the cheapest and best deals, I only paid £600 used and in similar conditions to loks.
most of the usage is cosmetic and can be replaced for example the grips and ports and with loose screws being tightened up, it’s as good as new!

  5. The Nikon D lenses are screw drive and don’t focus fast. The newer lenses would perform much faster.

  6. Next do film kits. Include film & developing and make the limit something like 200£. Also, I had no idea they have a concorde on display there. And how freaking awesome that you can actually enter it.

    1. Film and the wet process after it are for duds who haven’t got a clue how dirty and time consuming it is. I did it for decades and will NEVER return to any wet B/W process. Wet colour is completely impossible (at home).
Do a websearch for “So entwickeln Sie einen S/W-Film selbst” to see how it works.
Keep in mind that decent equipment does not exist anymore.

    2. I’ve been inside a Concorde, I always expected they would be bigger and more modern inside.
Going inside I can see why they might have wanted to mothball them in comparison with modern jets. 🤣

  7. Just bought a mint pentax k1000 and pentax 50mm 1.2f for a combined $400 second hand. Couldn’t be happier with the setup. Badass cameras will always be badass

  8. It’s funny. It’s less than two years since I sold my 5D Mark IV to get an R6. Now I look at the similarly-sized D810 and my thought is, “That thing is effing HUGE. Who’ll want to shoot that thing?” despite the fact that it’s a very well-regarded camera. Times change.

  9. You guys are the reason I bought a Canon 7d. Back from your dig rev days. Got it from Canon refurbished. Still working great. Glad you two back together.

    1. They are the reason I picked up my first ever camera, Nikon D300, now on Fujifilm X100S. All used of course.

  10. I’ve basically owned all system from a rebel xs to a Nikon D5 to a Sony A7r III and ended up with a Fuji X Pro3 which spark my joy of shooting again. Thanks to Kai and Lok starting from Digital Rev ❤

  11. Daaamn! I remember this kind of videos from the digital rev days. I love the format, you should do more of those. Maybe do a 35mm film kit next? Like getting a camera, lens and some film for fixed budget.

  12. A wonderful feeling of Deja-vu. Kai and Lok together, having fun and and demonstrating that you CAN get into decent photography without spending a fortune. You are an awesome team and have entertained me for years, ever since I first came across your original DRTV videos. You have also given me huge amounts of direct info about kit, techniques to use in my photography and views of places I might never see in real life; Taiwan, Amsterdam, Cologne and many others. And it was Lok, and his original video of the soon-to-be-launched X-Pro2 that got me started with Fuji. Many thanks to you both and I look forward to more videos like this, as well as fresh ‘what’s in my bag?’ shows etc.

  13. D810 is such a banger! It`s crazy you can get one for £400 nowadays. I remember yearning for one back whan I had a D3100 but it costed more than the car I was driving. Such a good deal! If only the EasyJets and Ryanairs wouldn`t charge you an arm and a leg for luggage so you can actualy take these bulky DSLRs with you…

    1. Watch out when flying budget airlines, I’ve gone to try and book them before, and by the time they added on all the bells and whistles it was cheaper to fly with British Airways or Lufthansa.

  14. I like the colorgrading you applied to your shots and yes: the D810 is an excellent camera and will stay so in the foreseeable future.

Display size (screen or printed) is the ultimate limiting factor to pixel count and everything 24 MP and over is capable of huge prints (120 x80 cm) if you work properly. The D810 sensor comes close to 8K standard, the AF is reliable …. and AF-S Nikkor lenses are dropping in price due to people converting to EVIL (electronic viewfinder, interchangeable lens).

If you get yourself a D810 you are set for the next ten years at least. There is even a rather high number of qualified repair shops who are specialized in Nikon and Nikkor repairs and who can help when Nikon says “not supported anymore”.

  15. A few weeks ago I picked up a Fuji X-T3 from MPB for just around $700 and some change, then picked up the new TTArtisans 27mm f2.8 af lens to park on the body. It’s a great little combo that left me about $200 of your budget. Great little kit for not a ton of money all things considered!

  16. First thing; the D810 has amazing tracking, even in LiveView, native iso of 64, and an autofocus to -2 EV, the sickest dynamic range of all cameras. I still use it for wildlife, landscapes and portraits, it’s amazing.

  17. I’ve had great experiences with MPB over the past couple of years. Recently scored an A7sii for video. £574 in decent condition! 6 month warranty is a definite nice to have when buying used. Trading in usually makes sense, especially with camera bodies in my experience.

  18. wow, so nice to see these guys together again. Reminds me of the DigitalRev days.

  19. I really appreciate this style of video, it makes me feel as if I was there with the bois. Great job guys keep it up!

    1. That’s what I like about Kai and Lok. Instead of a dry technical review or a pushy product ad, their reviews are like hanging out with a couple of friends.
