for the Sony a1 to get the new autofocus features, it’ll have to be in an a1 mkII
I love sony and love using their cameras, but their lack of firmware updates to provide new features within their cameras is annoying. They literally could update most of their new cameras to have updated features but it feels like they simply choose to not do it… it’s the Apple effect sadly 🙃
Yes, Just things like focus bracketing and Long exposure should be very easy to inplement in older cameras. Object detection Autofocus might be a Problem, because IT requires more computing power.
@Markus definitely! I mean sometimes the updates they give are just barely anything. Lumix from what I’ve heard really do their firmware updates so nicely to help give the best for the camera.
Agreed. I don’t own a Sony, but we also need to also take in account the processor. The logic built into it is designed to work with the current hardware. I’m not sure that throwing a software update to previous hardware would work well or perform exactly the same.
Sort of, but not really… Apple still provides updates all the way back to the iPhone SE & 8 (based in iOS 16). I agree on the lack of firmware. That being said, Sony could take a page from Apple on updates (or Tesla for that matter).
@Kepano 808 Apple doesn’t allow updates that work best with the older phones though. That’s how they kinda force you to get a newer one sadly. I’ve seen it plenty with friends with oder phones. But true, at least they provide updates consistently haha so they got that part.
4:28 no I don’t think they can do anything about it because they built in an extra chip into the A7RV for the improved AI autofocus. The A1 does not have that extra chip so it isn’t possible with an update.
I bought the A7RV for the screen, EVF, and better stabilization. Having great AF is just an added benefit. For what it offers, it’s an incredible value. Zero regrets!! I will never buy another camera without a 4-way screen – it’s simply amazing to use and makes you want to go out and shoot.
Pierre you know it’s a AI chip in there right? We’re all gonna have to wait for the next in line from those specific cameras. I wish my a7iv’s had it but I’m cool either way.
I believe Sony can update the A1 to do better subject detection AF without the AI chip.
But….. all future cameras will likely have the AI chip. Sony isn’t going to spend extra resources writing code to make it work in prior cameras. Waste of resource from their POV. Better off focusing on new A1ii development etc.
Though there are other great simple software features that the A1 should being their flagship….
Yeap. As mentioned below they can still make updates from speaking to engineers working on these not only in AF but also in ibis algorithms. Let’s not mention menus and breathing compensation 🥲🥲🥲
@Pierre T. Lambert Yes it’s crazy to me that they haven’t added breathing comp or focus mapping to the A1 and it’s the main reason I’m waiting on a Mark ii because the flagship should have EVERY feature from all the cameras especially at $6500 smh. Hopefully they do the right thing because it definitely made me not get one and another A7iv for my second body.
@Marcus Gregory all this boils down to resources & money. Sony can do it, but do they want to?
IMO, don’t think their firmware team is that big. They’re better off working on the latest upcoming product than going back to the dozens of legacy models. Add features would each need time testing, quality checking, updating documentation and support etc. Cost resources and time that takes away new development.
If Sony only released 1-2 models every 3 years it would be in the better interest to update firmware frequently. But, they pump out so many models every year.
They are welcome to update my A9!
I love my A9 for the B&W jpegs, which are better than my other Sony’s and my Nikon and its downloaded profiles!
I firkin LOVE my A7R5 ! I got the 24-70 GM and the 100-400 GM for it and I am having a blast. This thing is such a beast and well made. It’s my first Sony and I’m in love!!
I wonder how the A7RV compares to the EOS R5 – some reviews still favour the EOS’ AF, which is interesting…
What annoys me is that the A7R4 is such a bad camera when it comes to autofocus as well. It’s clearly a stills camera, and yet, there isn’t even focus tracking for animals. Even the A7S3 has it and it is really frustrating.
Still thinking about just selling the A7R4 and some lenses I don’t use too often and going straight for the A7R5.
So when A7R6 comes out with fish detection the A7R5 is then the next “bad camera”?
Sony need to get better at their firmware feature updates, or better at releasing a generation of cameras together so there’s a reasonable tiering to their cameras. Like the a1 was cool, but immediately the a7iv had a new focusing feature the a1 didn’t, and the the a7rv with it’s ai chip 🤷♂️
What we really need is a firmware update for the A1 to have the fully articulated screen from the RV. I’m sure it can be done! I love my RV 😄
Hahah yes please 🤣
I’ve watched so many videos on the A7RV and the A1. None of them help me make the choice. I am looking to get another camera body and can’t decide between the two. The autofocus and screen of the RV pulls me in, but the 30 fps of the A1 brings me back. I am hoping that an updated model of the A1 comes out, with the autofocus and screen of the RV. For those that have both, which do you prefer? I shoot a lot of wildlife and surf photography, but also do some portrait and landscape stuff. What do you think Pierre?
Dang this is exactly the dilemma honestly. Especially when you take into consideration price!! Try both if you can…. I don’t always use that 30fps burst and could do with 10 in my case and get the screen and ai af – but then the video is a bit better on the a1 from what I understand (rolling read out). For sport the RV will have distortion at high speed like tennis rackets being bended see online which won’t on the a1…
And the 30fps only works on Sony glass.. limited to 15 for sigma
Glad you got to hang out with Chris!!
The hot shoe issue has been reported by many users. In truth, that’s the potential weak area for even the best sealed body. My R5 did survive a dunking in sea water once, though. But one of the FStopper guys got his D850 rinsed by a rogue wave and it totally shorted out. So, be careful out there and get a hot shoe protector if you can find one that fits.
that might also be the easiest to fix with a software update, they just need to ignore whatever signal comes from there
@Cristian Baluta I’m no engineer but it sounds like a wiring design problem. If water does compromise the body, you want a warning before it gets bricked.
Fantastic video! I’m noticing a slight difference in NC lot science compared to the a1, not in a negative way. Have you noticed this as well?
The additional chip in the A7R V Is the difference. Firmware are essentially instructions for the chips. For sure future cameras will have this Ai chip.
This is just my opinion about my own work: I don’t consider nailing focus or exposure to be the primary challenges in photography. Instead, I find the primary challenges to be composition, subject selection, lighting, perspective, etc., and these are things that I don’t think technology can really do for you.
Focus and exposure are the mechanics of what a photographer does, but I don’t see a lot of people saying things like, “Wow! That exposure is terrific!” or “That shot is so well focused!” Focus and exposure are pre-requisites and it’s important to do them both properly, but I don’t think it is generally part of the “art form” (with some obvious exceptions, of course, as you can intentionally use both to create specific outcomes).
For me, if I can get those mechanical pre-requisites out of my way so I can concentrate more on what a photographer ACTUALLY does, that’s a win.
TL;DR – Does the A7RV make photography too easy? For me, no…because I still have to choose the shot and tell the story. Sony can’t do that for me.
The AI focus already exists in the iPhone with prores/Raw images. The iPhone saves them as .dng and produces a “focusmap” on the picture of the subject, even including the objects they interact with. Ty Cheng has a great video about it. 🙂
I bought it. It’s great, but yeah, I feel like my a1 is now lacking some serious features that should just be there now. I’m seriously considering returning the a7Rv because It’s not the camera that I really want. What I want is an a1 with that autofocus, articulating screen, better ibis, and new top dials.
As someone who has an A7S3, the only thing I’m kinda upset about is the Focus Breathing Compensation. I know a couple other YouTubers have also complained about it. I hope that + animal eye can come out this year in an update. Hard to be too upset about clean 12,800 ISO though.
