Recently I visited Cleveleys Beach to take a few Landscape pictures with the intent of adding them to my website and offer them. Cleveleys belongs to the Fylde Coast, North West UK coastline 10-minutes far from Blackpool.
I wanted to consist of Mary's Shell in the image. Mary's Shell is a public art piece.
The water level was beneficial as the tide was completely in which is precisely what I wanted. A full tide renders the lower part of the shell in the sea, just best. The weather wasn't particularly dazzling however as long as there are the clouds in the sky there is constantly a picture to be had!
I have actually likewise included my post-processing workflow to the video too. This way you can see how I develop images that offer from start to end up.

Great video, loved the image – especially the color version. From my perspective any image that provokes an emotional response would be “fine art”. This one definitely qualifies. Really enjoy it when you show some of your photoshop techniques, always learn something.
That’s excellent, Gary. Really informative and clear. I tend to do 80% on LR as I’m a bit intimidated by photoshop -but this is really helpful for going further. As for the definition of fine art -I agree that it’s quite hard to make a firm distinction between what it is and what it isn’t. I think you went a long way in the right direction. I would add that the artist’s ‘changing’ of the image that you mentioned needn’t be wholly or chiefly to do with post processing – the decisions about framing, composition, etc, are part of it too. And it can still be fine art, I’d say, even if it isn’t easy to sell. Great video -thanks.
1spitfirepilot agree with you also. Thanks as always 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
brilliant gary, thanks for demonstrating that process with us, I’ve learnt something new and going to put that into practice myself as I am a lightroom user, I feel relieved that I thought I was the only one suffering from spots and marks all over the image after taking 10 stop images
It’s not so much the 10-stopper, it was the F22 that shows the marks on the sensor. Cheers Jim 👍👍
Such a class shot!! Your work is always worthy of it! You made photoshop look so easy, Thanks for the tips Garry!!
You’re welcome, thank you 👍👍
Love your work Gary and I agree with the fine art statement as it gives a person whatever creative latitude they need to make a piece of art.
Thank you Keith 👍👍👍👍
Great vlog as always Gary. I am a massive fan of your work, and to see a little bit of your process is always helpful. I think I prefer the colour shot over the B/W but can’t make my mind up. Thanks
Very kind of you to say Alan, thank you 👍👍
Looks great Gary, could we have more fine art please, I find myself leaning towards it more and more these days, I like this type of content especially with the post processing included 👍
More to come. Thank you 👍👍
Very very informative Gary, I was hooked! Lovely images and very natural flow tutorial, thank you! Loved both images but the colour one was incredible.
Cheers Darren, very kind 👍
Been doing this for twenty five years and still love it when someone inspires me. Great video, nicely put together and I personally love the image. Thanks for posting Gary.
Cheers Tom, thank you 👍
Awesome video Gary. Love the simplicity of the image which I feel is the art of “Fine Art photography” Great to see the whole process as well from taking the image to the finished product, magic stuff. Personally, I preferred the colour image, it just seems to add a bit more dimension to the image. Thanks for sharing!!
Hello Gary! Good work! I really like the fine-art process from taking picture to the final result. Really creative. The most unassuming picture can be with postprod. as well it can be. These days I do not paint in conjunction with the Opacity, I work only with Flow and usually set to 6% (fine-tuning). In the picture you did now that was super nice, I had put on a little bit of vignetting. I have Nik collection installed and very found of it. Greetings from me and Sweden.
Thank you. Glad you liked the video. Greeting back at you from the UK 👍
Very nice art! And very nice instruction as well! You’ve given me some great ideas in both areas. Keep your insights coming!
Thank you 👍👍
I’ve always categorized Fine Art Photography as a series of work created by an artist (to be sold/exhibited) from a personal POV. Versus commercial — where the client (with their own vision in mind) commissions a photographer to create the work.
I suppose you’re correct though, that there isn’t any definitive description. Great video btw, thanks for sharing.
Wonderful tutorial. This is my first view of your tutorials. It was very helpful. It can be so easy to overdo edits in post-processing. This photo looks great in B&W or the blue color. Love the smooth sea. Very nice. Can’t wait to see more. Thank you!
Thank you for marking the big, HUGE difference between photography and art. Too many do this and call it a natural photo. Yea, I am a “purist”. I learned on actual film. I think it is fraud to call an overly manipulated image a photo shot. It’s not. I tend to not do too much manipulation of my shots. Raw photos can be art as well but it takes more time and work to get that kind of shot. I learned a lot from this video, so thank you. But to your fans, please, if you sell your photos, make sure you are honest. Is it a true image you took or is it art. Let people know.
Very true Rod. Always be honest 👍👍👍👍
Great video and lovely photograph. I’m also myself an art photographer, shooting mainly landscapes (some art photographers prefer the abstraction) for almost 5 years now, and let me tell you that your video is so inspirational.
I just have a quick question, which is motivated for my curiosity: what is that shell that you photographed? is it a sculpture? or just a piece of steel crap left ashore?
Congratulations on your work! Warmest regards.
Glad you liked it Rafa. I think it could be either 🙂 It’s public art. Info here… https://tinyurl.com/y226yfon
Great video Gary. And what you said at the start of the video is exactly what fine art is in my experience. Enjoy the way you present your videos. Simple and understandable for everyone. There are some on youtube that can still learn from you. Thank you for this video my friend.
Gary, Thank you SOOO much for this video. I have been wanting to learn HOW to take this style of pictures. I feel MUCH more confident to be able to add this style to my portfolio. WELL DONE!!!
Absolutely great. Love the enthusiasm, the shortcuts and especially the stretching the bottom part of the image been of great help.
Any tips on using layers masks to fade horizons in photoshop, as seen often in this type of photography?
Anyway, kind regards from the other side of the North Sea. Keep up the good work 😉
Thank you Frank 👍👍
Well done Gary, loved the vid, as you say” everybody’s interpretation of a photo is different and that’s what makes it art” i really liked the black and white version of the photo and I’m looking forward to more vids.
Cheers John 👍👍
